Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch on Tuesday said criticism of judges’ honesty, integrity and motives, even from President Donald Trump, is "disheartening" and "demoralizing," The Hill reports.
Gorsuch made the comments at his confirmation hearing during an exchange with Sen. Richard Blumenthal. Blumenthal, a Democratic senator from Connecticut, mentioned Trump's attacks on federal judge James Robart after Robart placed a halt on Trump’s travel ban. He noted Trump calling Robart a "so-called judge" and asked how Gorsuch would have felt had Trump said the same about him.
"I know these people and how decent they are and when anyone criticizes the honesty or integrity or the motives of a federal judge, I find that disheartening. I find that demoralizing because I know the truth," Gorsuch said.
"Anyone, including the President of the United States?" Blumenthal followed up with.
"Anyone is anyone," Gorsuch replied.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer tweeted Gorsuch wasn’t referring to Trump’s comments specifically.
Gorsuch was previously reported to have made the comments privately, but Tuesday was the first time he had done so publicly.
