President Donald Trump defended the shutting down of government over the Democrats' obstruction to his request of $5.6 billion for border security, saying he can relate to those not getting paid during the shutdown and many of them agree with the move.

"I can relate, and I'm sure that the people that are on the receiving end will make adjustments," President Trump told reporters before heading to Camp David. "They always do. And they'll make adjustments."

President Trump added many of the federal workers not getting paid during the partial shutdown of the government — approximately 25 percent (800,000 workers) — "agree 100 percent" with the cause of the border wall.

"People understand exactly what's going on," President Trump added. "But many of those people that won't be receiving a paycheck, many of those people agree 100 percent with what I'm doing."

The government shutdown is headed into its third week, amid the resistance to include funds for border security that may be used to build the wall President Trump promised during the 2016 campaign.

Democrats have resisted the Trump presidency since his election, voting against his promises and vowing investigations into 2016 election meddling and potential Trump campaign collusion. And, Sunday, when Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., admitted President Trump has the authority to declare a national emergency to build the wall, he added the Democrats can work to stop him with a court challenge to prove the emergeny use of funds is necessary.
