Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., says he’s confident a border crisis compromise will return aid back to Central America.
In an interview aired Sunday on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Graham, in Turkey, said he hammered out the compromise with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
“I spent about an hour with Speaker Pelosi and here's the compromise,” he said. “We’ll start turning the aid back on to Central America.
“It is in our national security interest to help the northern triangle nations with their economy, with their rule of law problems,” he continued. “But if you don't turn off the magnets that attract people, which is our asylum laws, if you don't reform them, they'll keep coming.”
The House and the Senate passed $4.5 billion packages to aid border officials, but Republicans and Democrats can’t agree on what the money should be used for, the Washington Post has reported.
