Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., has paid $196,100 from campaign funds to a company owned by his chief of staff's wife, according to Federal Election Commission filings reported by The Washington Free Beacon.
Patsy Simmons, wife of chief of staff Robert Simmons, also works for Meeks, as treasurer of Meeks' campaign committee.
Typically, the treasurer is not a paid position, but payments from the committee are going to Einna, Inc., a company registered by Patsy Simmons in 2008. Meeks' political action committee, the Build America PAC, has paid tens of thousands to Einna over nine years, according to the Free Beacon.
The $196, 100 in payments came over an eight-year span, starting when Robert Simmons became chief of staff.
The campaign finance records show that during this election cycle, Einna has received $15,000 from Meeks for "administrative consulting services," while the PAC was given $4,000.
The Meeks PAC and campaign committees have come under scrutiny before. The New York Observer in May noted that both organizations have been listed at the address of Suite 535 at 153-01 Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica, Queens, which does not exist.
Both organizations are actually at Suite 205 in that building, according to the Observer.
