Former acting director of national intelligence Richard Grenell says the reported ties between suspected Chinese spy Christine Fang and Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., should be investigated by the Gang of Eight.
In an interview on Wednesday with Sinclair Broadcasting’s “America This Week,” Grenell said Democratic and Republican leaders of the House and Senate and the heads of both chambers' intelligence committee need to dig into allegations that first surfaced in Axios, which reported a spy, Christine Fang, developed ties with California politicians, including Swalwell, a member of the House Intelligence committee.
“He had access to incredibly sensitive information,” Grenell pointed out, adding: "They need to be briefed on exactly what is known about what Eric Swalwell was doing with this Chinese spy.”
"The Chinese constantly look to leverage their relationships on a variety of issues with politicians,” Grenell said. “This is more than just a story of hypocrisy in Washington, D.C.”
“This story goes a little deeper in that he strategically was downplaying the Chinese threat,” he said. “And I think now we have to dig deep and ask ourselves, why is s a member of the House Intelligence Committee allowed to do this?"
