Grover Norquist led the chorus of cheers from conservatives celebrating the Supreme Court's ruling Wednesday to upend public unions' ability to impose dues on non-members.
"This is the most consequential victory for civil rights in the United States in decades," Norquist wrote in a statement. "No American should be forced to join any organization or pay cash to others as a requirement to earn and keep their job. A great injustice has been righted."
SCOTUS ruled in favor of plaintiff Mark Janus, overturning its own decades-old decision.
"Every year for decades, billions . . . of dollars have been taken by force by government labor unions from workers without their permission and spent on politics against their wishes, " Norquist wrote. "That ends [Wednesday], decades late, but once and for all.
Norquist was not alone:
"[Wednesday's] decision is a win for teachers, police officers, firefighters, and public servants, who shouldn't be forced to join a political organization or government union," Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., said in a statement.
"Workers should be trusted to make that decision for themselves, and the Supreme Court affirmed [Wednesday] their First Amendment right to do just that," McMorris Rodgers wrote. "This decision rightly upholds our freedom of speech and freedom of association. Workers shouldn't have to abdicate their rights just because they have jobs in public service."
"Of the many liberties we enjoy as Americans, none ranks higher than the freedom of speech and association," Sen. Orrin Hatch said in a statement. "[Wednesday], the Supreme Court declared that those rights extend to public sector employees, as surely as anyone else, by ending the offensive practice of exacting union dues from unwilling employees for causes they do not support.
"Since the late 1970s, I have fought to protect the rights of workers against union compulsion. That fight has been at times lonely, but always right. [Wednesday], the cause advances one more step of the way."
