Minority Leader Harry Reid thinks Sen. Marco Rubio ought to be sued for the paychecks he pocketed "while he was off playing around, running for president" — and missing Senate votes.

"Not only did he take those checks, he cashed every one of them, every month," the Nevada Democrat railed, Roll Call reports. "He was never here, and the state of Florida was missing a senator during that period of time."

Reid's startling suggestion came when Reid was asked what he thought of Rubio's decision last week to seek re-election in the wake of his failed presidential bid.

"Let me give you my thoughts," he said, Roll Call reports. "First of all, on the day he announces he's running for the Senate, he misses a very important Foreign Relations meeting. Here's how I feel about this: I feel that Marco Rubio should be sued to pay back all the money that the federal government paid him while he was off playing around, running for president."

"So Marco Rubio, in my opinion, owes the American taxpayers and owes the people of the state of Florida some time," he added.

Yet, Roll Call reports, Reid never answered a follow-up question on whether he felt the same way about Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, who also missed votes during his campaign.
