Sen. Harry Reid is calling for a "9/11-type commission" on Russia's interference of the presidential election before the Electoral College votes on Dec. 19, he said during an interview at a BuzzFeed Brews event.

"I think this is as big a deal as Watergate, as 9/11. I think they should have a 9/11-type commission. I know that [Sens.] Dianne Feinstein and Ben Cardin and others are calling for that. I think it's a step in the right direction," Reid said. "This is a scandal that has been uncovered."

The CIA told senators in a closed-door meeting that Russia was behind the hacking with the sole purpose of getting Donald Trump elected president, the Washington Post reported over the weekend. Trump has since slammed the claim, but lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are requesting further inquiry into the matter.

Reid says the Electoral College should receive an intelligence briefing because of the sensitivity of the situation. Technically, Electoral College voters could pick Clinton on Dec. 19 as they are "theoretically free to vote as their conscience dictates" says Laurence Tribe, a professor of constitutional law at Harvard Law School, but it would be an unprecedented move.
