Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and GOP presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump are locked in a tie in the battleground state of Virginia — and both are deep under water in their favorability ratings, a new poll shows.

The Roanoke College survey, released Monday, breaks down like this:
  • Clinton: 38 percent
  • Trump: 38 percent
  • Undecided: 11 percent
  • Someone else: 11 percent
The candidates' favorability ratings break down this way:
  • Clinton: 30 percent favorable; 50 percent unfavorable
  • Trump: 23 percent favorable; 56 percent unfavorable
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

"This is not a 'feel good' poll," Harry Wilson, director of the Institute for Policy and Opinion Research, said in a statement released with the survey.

"We have talked about 'lesser of the evils' choices for several years, but this race may epitomize that statement . . . and we've barely begun the real nastiness."

"With each of the major party candidates so far under water in terms of unfavorable ratings, it is a little frightening to think where this could end," he added, saying third-party candidates "could draw some support."

Virginia went for the GOP presidential candidate in every election from 1968 to 2004, with President Barack Obama narrowly winning the state in both 2008 and 2012, The Hill notes
