Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that Donald Trump calling her a "bigot" at a Mississippi rally proved that he was "taking a hate campaign mainstream."

"Donald Trump is showing who he is — and we ought to believe him," the Democratic nominee told Anderson Cooper in a telephone interview on CNN. "He is taking a hate campaign mainstream.

"He has brought it into his campaign. He has brought it into our communities."

Clinton then referenced Trump's attacks on President Barack Obama's birthplace, reports that his company has been sued for housing discrimination and how he has attacked a federal judge overseeing a case against Trump University for his Mexican heritage.

"Donald Trump is a person who is very much peddling bigotry and paranoia," the Democratic nominee said.

At a rally in Jackson, Trump called Clinton a bigot who has taken minority votes for granted.

"Hillary Clinton is a bigot who sees people of color only as votes, not as human beings worthy of a better future," the Republican nominee told supporters at the Mississippi Coliseum. "She is going to do nothing for African Americans. She is going to do nothing for Hispanics.

"She is going to take care of herself, her husband and her donors. Those are the only ones she cares about."
