Pandering to Blacks? Hillary Invokes Beyonce Hot Sauce in Interview

Hillary Clinton told a group of black radio hosts Monday she carries hot sauce around with her and then seemed to admit to pandering to African-Americans.

Clinton made the remark during an interview on "The Breakfast Club," a syndicated morning show based in New York City.

"Hot sauce," Clinton said flatly when asked if there was an item she carries around with her.

The three hosts — DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God — appeared to be in disbelief at the Democrat presidential candidate's answer.

"Are you getting in formation right now?" asked Charlamagne Tha God, referring to a Beyonce song that includes the line, "I keep hot sauce in my bag, swag." Former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani said Beyonce's performance of the song at this year's Super Bowl was racist and anti-police.

Clinton then laughed and said, "Hot sauce. Yes. Yes."

Charlamagne Tha God then remarked, "Now listen, I just want you to know that people are gonna see this and say, 'OK, she's pandering to black people again.'"

The hosts all laughed at the comment, and then Clinton said, "OK. Is it working?"

"No seriously, Clinton added. "I've been eating a lot of hot sauce. A lot of raw peppers and hot sauce … because I think it keeps my immune system strong."

The hot sauce conversation starts right before the 25:00 mark of the interview.

Throughout the interview, Clinton seemed to change her tone and the way she spoke, which she's been accused of doing in the past when speaking to African-American crowds.

Clinton was also asked how her husband, former President Bill Clinton, proposed to her. After she made light of the fact that the couple was living together, she said they went on a trip to England and he popped the question in front of a lake.

"And I said, which I thought it was a reasonable thing, 'Well, let me think about it.'"

Clinton then burst into laughter with the hosts.
