Hillary Clinton told BBC Radio 4 that she will not be a candidate for president again but will remain involved in politics and continue to speak out against President Donald Trump.

Speaking on the station's "Woman's Hour" program in comments broadcast on Tuesday, Clinton said "I think I'm in a position where my voice will actually be magnified, because I am not running and there's a very good basis, as we watch Trump's support shrink, that people will say 'Well, what she said was right and now where do we go from here?'".

Clinton said that in writing and promoting her book, "I'm trying to make the case about what we need to do so that what happened in my election doesn't happen again. But I will also be raising money and support for candidates and causes I believe in. ... And I'll be supporting the Democratic Party in the elections this year, next year and 2020."

Her comments come after Trump tweeted on Monday that he hoped Clinton, would run for president again in 2020.

Clinton's radio interview was taped after she had to miss the live show after breaking her toe in a fall on a stairway on Monday.

Clinton admitted that as Election Day in 2016 neared she was so confident of victory that she had not even prepared for the possibility of losing.

"I thought I was going to win, I thought I'd have the awesome responsibility and great honor of being the first woman president," she said. "I had not worked on a concession speech, I had worked on a speech celebrating a victory."

When she realized that she had lost the election, Clinton described the moment as "a devastating personal loss, because I felt responsible and I felt particularly terrible that someone I thought was not qualified or temperamentally suitable to be president was going to assume that office. But I did hope that he would surprise us all and grow into it."
