House Democrats are set to bring a controversial Homeland Security appropriations bill to the floor next week that will include border wall and immigration enforcement, among other issues, The Hill reports.
The bill was left out of consideration last year, and up until last week was expected to fall by the wayside again, The Hill noted. That was until several progressive amendments made their way into the spending bill and set the stage for the DHS considerations as well.
The decision doesn't sit well with the the four progressive House members known as "the squad": Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota,, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, Ayanna Pressley, D-Massachusetts, and Rashida Tlaib, D-Michigan. The four have vowed to vote against any bill that funds Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
"Last year, the four of us voted against this CBP funding, clear eyed that CBP and ICE are rogue agencies that act to inflict harm on our communities and have a pattern of behavior of abuse and mismanagement of funds," the four said in a joint statement last week.
"This year, the House must hold CBP accountable for their egregious violation of the law by withholding any further funding and imposing additional accountability measures with real consequences."
The Hill notes that the DHS bill does fund those agencies, but the number of ICE beds was cut, and the funding for President Donald Trump's border wall was rescinded.
