Activists played audio of crying babies outside the Virginia home of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Friday morning as they chanted: "Free the kids," HuffPost is reporting.
The protest was organized by the group CREDO Action, according to the website. The activists held signs reading: "Shame" and "Child Snatcher."
President Donald Trump ended his administration’s practice this week of separating children from their parents, who enter the U.S. illegally at the southern border.
But Trump said his "zero tolerance" policy would remain and parents would now be detained with their kids.
"A lot of attention has been on the border, and rightly so, on the children and the families and the detention centers there, but I think the thing that we know is that the people that are making the decisions resulting those detention centers are here in D.C," said Heidi Hess, co-director of CREDO Action. "We feel like it’s really important to hold them accountable everywhere."
Nielsen was home during the start of the demonstration. She later had to walk by protesters, who shouted "Shame" as she left, HuffPost reported.
Earlier this week, Nielsen had been confronted by protesters while she dined at a Mexican restaurant in the nation’s capital.
"If kids don't eat in peace, you don't eat in peace," protesters shouted, according to video footage of the incident.
