A Democratic House candidate running in Nevada claims Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid told him not to run because he is a Muslim, reports
The Hill.
Jesse Sbaih, an immigrant from Jordan, said in an email to his supporters, that Sen. Reid told him, "Let me be blunt, you are not going to win because you are a Muslim."
Reid's office denied the claim.
"They met, but Sen. Reid never said that," spokeswoman Kristen Orthman tells The Hill. "Jesse is using Sen. Reid's name to seek his 15 minutes of fame."
Orthman pointed out that Sbaih couldn't provide evidence to support his claims, although she said Sen. Reid did tell Sbaih that he was not likely to win, but it was due to Sbaih's lack of experience in political office, not his religion.
Sbaih said Reid's office offered him a position on the Election Assistance Commission, which Sbaih turned down, saying the offer "was an attempt to muscle me out of the race."
Orthman also denied that claim. Sbaih said since then, he has had little success in hiring staff.
On his
campaign website, Sbaih wrote, "I decided to run for Congress because I want to make sure that all Americans have the opportunities that I had to achieve the American Dream."
Sbaih took to Twitter:
