The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee reported it took in $6.26 million — the highest off-year August fundraising ever, NBC News reported.
The DCCC is the campaign arm of House Democrats. Republicans haven't released their August fundraising tally yet, but Democrats have outraised the GOP in each of the three previous months, according to the network news.
"With the House in play, another record-breaking month of fundraising for the DCCC is a clear sign that the grassroots energy behind House Democrats is constantly growing stronger," said Tyler Law, a spokesman for the committee.
"Given Speaker [Paul] Ryan's failure to govern with unified Republican control of Washington, it's understandable that vulnerable House Republicans are opting for retirement while we are recruiting incredible candidates deep into the map.
By contrast, the committee had raised $4.15 million in August 2015 — the last comparable year, NBC News reported. The DCCC has raised $72.46 million in 2017.
The National Republican Congressional Committee has raised about the same amount for the year, according to the network news.
And it pointed out the Democratic National Committee has struggled with its own fundraising. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee expressed confidence in the party's ability to bring in cash.
"Strong support for President Trump and the party has propelled the RNC to robust fundraising numbers," RNC spokesman Chase Jennings said, the Washington Examiner reported. "The grassroots continue to give overwhelmingly positive responses to the president and our party's message."
