House Republicans have mounted another attempt to repeal the federal charter granted to the National Education Association, the largest teachers' union in the country and the only labor union chartered by Congress.
Rep. Mark Harris, R-N.C., on Wednesday introduced the National Education Association Charter Repeal Act, which "removes Congress' congressional seal of approval" from the NEA, which Republicans claim has "morphed into a mouthpiece for left-wing extremism."
He added, "The NEA was created to champion America's teachers and serve our schools, but it has spiraled into a partisan machine that's more about radical ideology than education. There's zero justification for the United States Congress to continue giving them our stamp of approval."
Harris was joined by Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn. and Reps. Mary Miller, R-Ill., and Ralph Norman, R-S.C., in filing the proposal. This is the third attempt by Republicans to repeal the charter, with the previous attempts having failed to pass through judicial panels in the House and Senate in 2022 and 2024.
"Rather than supporting students and educators, some anti-public education politicians are now introducing legislation to repeal the National Education Association charter because the billionaires that fund their campaigns don't want educators to have a voice," NEA President Becky Pringle said in a statement.
