House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz on Tuesday dismissed Democratic calls for an investigation into House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes over recent actions relating to the panel's probe into Russia and last year's election.

"That's ridiculous," the Utah Republican told Greta Van Susteren on MSNBC. "Doesn't even pass the basic sniff test."

Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland on Thursday demanded the investigation after Nunes, the California Republican, briefed President Donald Trump on surveillance information involving his associates that might have been swept up in incidental collection during the transition.

Nunes did not share the data with committee members before talking with Trump.

"He may not like the way Chairman Nunes is doing this or that," Chaffetz said. "He may say he made a mistake on this or that, but Nunes is a man of high integrity.

"He's done a great job chairing a very difficult committee," he added. "Has the full confidence of the Republican Conference, leadership, and myself, and a host of others."
