House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz said Tuesday that "I have my subpoena pen ready" after news reports President Donald Trump asked former FBI Director James Comey to end the Michael Flynn investigation in February.
The Utah Republican took to Twitter:
The New York Times reported Tuesday former FBI Director James Comey wrote a memo after a Feb. 14 meeting in which Trump asked him to drop the agency's probe into Flynn.
Trump fired Flynn the day before as national security adviser over questions about his disclosures about his Russian ties to Vice President Mike Pence.
The White House has denied the Times report.
"While the president has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn," the administration said in a statement.
"The president has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations," the statement continued. "This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey."
Chaffetz also told The Associated Press the memo raised concerns "about improper interference placed on an active investigation."
He said he ordered staffers to draft a letter to Justice Department officials seeking Comey's memos. The letter was expected Tuesday night.
In addition, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, told reporters he had invited Comey to testify before the panel at a public hearing.
"I've asked Comey to come before the Judiciary Committee to tell his side of the story," he said, according to Politico. "I think it would be good for him if he did.
"It would be good for the country."
Comey declined a request to testify Tuesday behind closed doors before the Senate Intelligence Committee, but the Times reported he would be willing to meet in open session.
