House Republicans Announce Subcommittee to Probe Jan. 6

By    |   Wednesday, 22 January 2025 03:13 PM EST

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and the House Republican Conference plan to establish a select subcommittee to continue the party's investigation into the events leading up to and after the Jan. 6, 2021, protests at the Capitol.

Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., will chair the group, which falls as a select subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, according to a statement released Wednesday.

"House Republicans are proud of our work so far in exposing the false narratives peddled by the politically motivated January 6 Select Committee during the 117th Congress, but there is still more work to be done," Johnson said. "We are establishing this Select Subcommittee to continue our efforts to uncover the full truth that is owed to the American people. The composition and other details regarding the Select Subcommittee will be announced soon."

Jordan, meanwhile, lauded Loudermilk as being the "leader in getting to the bottom of what the Democrat-led January 6 Committee failed to uncover, and we look forward to helping him bring all the facts to the American people."

Loudermilk commented that he's honored to be continuing the investigation into the events of Jan. 6 and the "failures that led to the breach of the United States Capitol."

"What happened at the Capitol that day was the result of a series of intelligence, security, and leadership failures at multiple levels within numerous entities," Loudermilk added. "I appreciate Speaker Johnson's commitment to our work, and I am looking forward to working with Chairman Jim Jordan to continue to uncover all the facts and begin the arduous task of making needed reforms to ensure this level of security failure may never happen again."

The announcement comes just two days after President Donald Trump pardoned roughly 1,500 defendants in cases related to the Jan. 6 incidents.

Meanwhile, Loudermilk chaired an oversight subcommittee in the last Congress that called for a criminal investigation against former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., in connection with the Democrat-led subcommittee investigating the Capitol attacks, reports The New York Times.

The subcommittee issued a 128-page report accusing Cheney of allegedly colluding with Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide who was the committee's star witness, and of using the subcommittee to attack then-former President Donald Trump.

Former President Joe Biden, in one of the final acts of his administration, issued a preemptive pardon for Cheney and other members of the first Jan. 6 select subcommittee.
