A rumor is circulating House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., will resign from his post within the next 30 to 60 days, with Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., set to replace him, Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., told a local news station Monday.
Amodei added no one has started to court Republicans on the leadership elections within the House Republican Conference.
"Now that is interesting, because no one has talked to members on how they are going to vote," Amodei told Nevada Newsmakers. "Now, maybe they have talked to all of the members but me – I don't know – so that is the rumor mill from last week."
Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong, though, told The Hill the Speaker is not resigning.
Scalise is currently the House majority whip.
Ryan's future has been speculated about before, including in December when he said he was "soul searching" about his leadership in the U.S. House.
When asked why he would resign, Amodei said: "I don't know. If I was just guessing, he wanted to do the tax-cut bill."
"You know, [former Speaker] John Boehner said the same thing: 'Hey, I checked all of the boxes I thought were important, and I'm moving on to whatever else.'"
