President Donald Trump has "delegitimized the press" and the media can't stand it, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Monday.
"The truth is Donald Trump is speaking directly to the American people instead of going through the filter of the press," Huckabee told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program. "They hate that. They can't stand it. He has delegitimized the press and taken away their exclusive ability to talk to the American people and they're going crazy. "
For example, when Time Magazine erroneously reported a bust of Martin Luther King Jr. had been removed from the Oval Office, but didn't happen, the story became fake news, said Huckabee.
"So when people talk about fake news, the American people understand that it's the mainstream media that has lost their credibility, not Donald Trump," said Huckabee. "They can scream and they can yell and kick all they want to, but I think Donald Trump has a responsibility to try to speak directly to the American people and of course the press has every right to say what they wish."
Huckabee also lauded Trump for his words to American business leaders, through his comments about making products in the United States, while cutting regulations by 75 percent.
"It's refreshing to have a president who understands what business people are going through," said Huckabee. "If you're a small business owner as I am, just hiring somebody, the amount of money that you spend just finding out what it is going to cost to hire the person and do everything right is half of their salary per year. A lot of people just don't even try to grow business. When businesses can't grow and when the government makes it so that it's more advantageous to shrink than grow your business, the economy is in trouble. Trump understands that. That's refreshing."
