Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Wednesday tweeted out an otherwise random thought that could be the makings of a GOP strategy to deal with the mess in Alabama.

Capitol Hill Republicans face no good options with the Dec. 12 special election bearing down fast.

Despite the many calls for Roy Moore to step aside and the GOP fundraising arms all severing ties with him, the former state Supreme Court chief justice remains resolute and defiant over the accusations of sexual misconduct nearly 40 years ago.

So that leaves the following options, all bad for Republicans:

  • Moore defeats Doug Jones, becomes U.S. senator.
  • Moore defeats Jones, eventually gets expelled by the Senate.
  • Jones defeats Moore.
  • GOP pushes write-in campaign with interim Sen. Luther Strange, who already got trounced by Moore in the special primary.

Or, Hewitt's idea.

Of course, Strange would need to resign prior to the Dec. 12 election, leaving Senate Republicans another vote short on the crucial tax legislation they're working to get done by the end of the year.
