Florida Sen. Marco Rubio might be reconsidering his decision not to run for reelection for his Senate seat in the wake of the gay nightclub shootings in his home state of Florida.
"I've been deeply impacted by it," Rubio said during an
interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt.
"I think when it visits your home state, and it impacts a community you know well, it really gives you pause to think a little bit about, you know, your service to your country and where you can be most useful to your country."
Rubio discussed foreign policy with Hewitt, but said he has not thought about reelection in the contest of the nation's foreign policy challenges.
"I really don't want to link the two things right now, because I don't want politics to intrude in all of this."
Rubio also appeared to reject the idea of gun control after the Orlando shootings. "The issue isn't the weapons they are using. The issue here is ideology,"
he said according to MSNBC.
A Republican, the former presidential candidate said in May that he is not running for reelection because a friend of his, Florida's Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, is running,
according to CNN.
He maintained that running for reelection is not his first priority, and "it's not part of our plan as a family."
However, he and his family are considering his political future.
"My family and I will be praying about all this, and we'll see what I need to do next with my life in regards to how I can best serve," Rubio said to Hewitt.
