Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, said Sunday he fears the House has “weaponized” the impeachment process against President Donald Trump.

In an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” the former CIA agent said impeachment should only be used for “a violation of the law.”

“My fear is that you weaponize impeachment for political gains in the future,” he said.

“Just like now, we have budget debates that become weaponized, voting for Supreme Court justices become weaponized, and for me, my standard for impeachment has always been a violation of the law.”

He also dismissed the notion that voting against impeachment would sets a bad precedent.

“I don’t believe that’s the message that’s being sent,” he said. “You can vote against impeachment and still disagree with some of the policies or some of the behavior.”

Hurd also weighed in on the Justice Department Inspector General’s report on the origins of the FBI probe of the Trump campaign and Russia meddling in the 2016 election.

“The real question is why were there are 17 lies in this report,” he said, adding: As a former intelligence officer, that’s absolutely outrageous. I don't understand why more people are not outraged.”
