Arkansas GOP Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Sunday said he expects Joe Biden to be the next president, noting President Donald Trump’s tweet that Joe Biden won a “rigged” election was the beginning of his acceptance.
In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Hutchinson said that “we need to accept the result.”
”I expect Joe Biden to be the next president of the United States,” he said. “It was good actually to see President Trump tweet out that he won. I think that’s the start of an acknowledgement.”
Hutchinson added the Department of Homeland Security “indicated this week that there's not any evidence of rampant fraud in the election that would undermine the result.”
Hutchinson also urged the transition process from the Trump administration to the incoming Biden administration should begin.
“It is very important that Joe Biden have access to the intelligence briefings to make sure he’s prepared,” Hutchinson said. “During times of transition our enemies have the opportunity to take advantage of us. We want to make sure there’ is s a smooth transition, particularly when it comes to the vaccine distribution of coronavirus that everyone understands what we do there.”
According to Hutchinson, Trump will have a lasting power with the Republican Party.
“Clearly President Trump will have a voice for a long time in the party,” he said. “Anybody that can generate those kinds of crowds. ... He will have an influence for some time to come."
