Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., has introduced a bill to keep states from giving money from Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) funds to illegal immigrants.
The measure, which was introduced Thursday, is a companion bill to legislation Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., introduced in the Senate in early May.
On his website, Buck said he "introduced legislation to ensure taxpayers aren’t bailing out states and localities that are setting up programs to send COVID-19 cash payments to illegal immigrants."
“With more than 40 million Americans out of work, it is unfair to send hard-earned taxpayer dollars to non-citizens who entered this country illegally," Buck said.
The No Bailouts for Illegal Aliens Act is meant to block any funding for illegal immigrants who didn't get stimulus checks from the CARES Act when it passed this March.
In April, California Governor Gavin Newsom blocked out $75 million to assist roughly 150,000 illegal immigrants who have faced financial hardships during the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the California Department of Social Services, the program gives an “undocumented adult who qualifies” a one-time payment of $500 and up to $1,000 for each household.
"We need to prioritize the American people by making sure taxpayers are not subsidizing blue states' plans to give cash payments to illegal immigrants,” Buck said.
