Joe Biden wants another shot at a comprehensive immigration reform package, an issue several senior Republican lawmakers are willing to work with the Democrat on should he win the 2020 presidential election, reports The Hill.
Several news outlets have called the race for Biden, though President Donald Trump refuses to concede, citing voter fraud. Newsmax will not announce a winner until enough states certify votes.
Biden has already promised to restore the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allows about 600,000 young immigrants who live in the U.S. illegally and were brought here as children to remain here. He is also expected to end the Trump administration's so-called Muslim ban, family separation practice, and construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall.
“I think that would be a good thing to do,” Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said about tackling immigration in 2021.
“The challenge is you’ve got to get the votes, but that to me is one of my biggest disappointments in my time in the Senate, our inability to get that done,” Cornyn said, adding that he would “try to be part of that effort” if the topic comes back up.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who has not accepted news outlets’ projection of a Biden win, said he would be willing to work with his administration “if he wins — and I’m not conceding that he will — in ways to make the country stronger.”
Republicans and Democrats have been at a standstill on immigration under the Trump administration.
The Senate in 2018 rejected a bipartisan plan to help young “Dreamer” immigrants and parcel money for the wall Trump wanted with Mexico.
