The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has raised a record $4.8 million in one week after shining a spotlight on Republicans calls to impeach President Barack Obama.
Rep. Steve Israel of New York, the committee's chairman, revealed the news Friday on Twitter, revealing that 240,000 people had given to the DCCC in the past week.
The amount in weekly fundraising is a new record for the committee, and larger, in fact, than some monthly fundraising totals for the DCCC in recent years, according to
The Hill.
The DCCC has led the National Republican Congressional Committee in fundraising during the current election cycle, increasing its cash advantage over the NRCC ahead of the fall elections.
Speaker John Boehner claimed earlier this week that Democrats have been raising the notion of a Republican impeachment effort to incite liberal voters and win campaign contributions for Democratic candidates running for re-election in November.
"We have no plans to impeach the president," he said. "We have no future plans. It's all a scam started by Democrats."
Republican strategist
Karl Rove also said this week that Obama is encouraging Republicans to call for his impeachment to "fatten the bank accounts of Democratic fundraising groups."
Former
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin raised the specter of impeachment earlier this month when she said the president should be held accountable for the border surge of illegal immigrants.
A
CNN poll showed that one in every three Americans agree with Palin's call for Obama to be impeached.
