President Donald Trump on Tuesday slammed the Democratic announcement on a formal impeachment inquiry, calling it "witch hunt garbage" and saying that it is "so bad for our country!"

"Such an important day at the United Nations, so much work and so much success," Trump tweeted, "and the Democrats purposely had to ruin and demean it with more breaking news witch hunt garbage.

"So bad for our Country!" Trump said.

In another tweets, he said: "They never even saw the transcript of the call. A total witch hunt!"

The president also ripped the five Democratic House committee chairs who will be involved in the inquiry: "Pelosi, Nadler, Schiff and, of course, Maxine Waters! Can you believe this?"

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced an inquiry into whether the president should be impeached.

The Democratic-controlled House will examine whether Trump sought Ukraine's help to smear former Vice President Joe Biden, the front-runner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, Pelosi said.

"Therefore today I'm announcing the House of Representatives is moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry," she said.

"The president must be held accountable," Pelosi said. "No one is above the law."
