Two-thirds of Iowa caucus-goers identified as liberal Democrats in an entrance poll taken Monday evening.
NBC News posted the results of its poll, which closed about 10 minutes before doors were locked at the nearly 1,700 caucus sites statewide. They show:
- 66% caucusgoers said they are liberal, compared with 68% who said so at the 2016 caucuses and 54% who said so at the 2008 caucuses.
- 34% said they are moderate/conservative, an increase from 2016 (32%). In 2008, that number was at 46%
A short time later, NBC posted additional results from the poll that showed Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has the most support among voters aged 17-29:
- Sanders has 51% support.
- Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg has 16%.
- Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has 11% support.
- Former Vice President Joe Biden garnered just 4% support.
The poll results came on the heels of comments made by Fox News political analyst Juan Williams, who predicted that liberal young voters will come out strong in support of Sanders for Monday's caucuses.
Heading into Monday, Sanders had an average of 23% support in Iowa among Democrats, according to RealClear Politics, putting him ahead of the more moderate Biden (19.3%).
