Schumer: Trump Jan. 6 Pardons 'Un-American'

By    |   Tuesday, 21 January 2025 02:48 PM EST

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump's pardons for over 1,000 people charged with crimes related to the 2021 Capitol riot are "un-American."

Trump on Monday issued pardons for about 1,500 people who were convicted or charged of crimes connected to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

Schumer said on the Senate floor Tuesday morning, "There is no other way to describe President Trump's pardon of Jan. 6 offenders than un-American. Let's be clear. President Trump didn't just pardon protesters. He pardoned some people convicted of assaulting police officers and seditious conspiracy."

He added, "It's a betrayal of the highest order of our Capitol Police officers who risked their lives to keep us safe."

Schumer later said in a statement: "The people who invaded the Capitol on January 6th, whether they committed violence or not, should not have been pardoned. They unlawfully broke into the Capitol to stop the peaceful transfer of power. What they did is a serious crime. Donald Trump is ushering in a Golden Age for people that break the law and attempt to overthrow the government."
