President Donald Trump on Thursday ribbed former FBI Director James Comey for throwing former No. 2 Andrew McCabe "under the bus" in a CNN interview.
Comey told Jake Tapper he could be a witness if McCabe faced criminal charges after the Justice Department referred the case to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington.
The Justice Department acted after the agency's inspector general found that McCabe had lied to investigators, and while under oath, about authorizing FBI agents to talk to The Wall Street Journal about its probe into Hillary Clinton private email use.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe last month, citing the inspector general's findings in his decision.
"Given that the IG's report reflects interactions that Andy McCabe had with me and other senior executives, I could well be a witness," Comey told Tapper.
He said he felt "conflicted" about the inspector general's conclusions on his former deputy.
"I like him very much as a person, but sometimes even good people do things they shouldn't do," he told Tapper.
"It's not acceptable in the FBI or the justice department for people to lack candor," Comey added. "It's something we take really seriously."
