Sen. Lindsey Graham Tuesday said that President Donald Trump made "a difficult decision" in firing FBI Director James Comey but that "I believe a fresh start will serve the FBI and the nation well."

"I know this was a difficult decision for all concerned," the South Carolina Republican, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a statement. "I appreciate Director Comey’s service to our nation in a variety of roles."

Trump fired Comey, 56, who was nominated in 2013 to a 10-year term by President Barack Obama.

"The FBI is one of our nation's most cherished and respected institutions, and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement," Trump said in a statement.

The White House said the search for a new FBI director was beginning immediately.

Comey testified last Wednesday before the Judiciary Committee on the status of an investigation into Russian meddling in last November's election.

"Given the recent controversies surrounding the director, I believe a fresh start will serve the FBI and the nation well," Graham said. "I encourage the president to select the most qualified professional available who will serve our nation’s interests."
