Jeb Bush is urging President Donald Trump to retain the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals program, saying ending the policy would be "callous and inhumane."

In an op-ed in the Miami Herald, the former GOP governor of Florida wrote the Dreamers who are protected by DACA "make important contributions to the national economy."

Approximately 33,000 in Florida have been granted work permits and protection from deportation under DACA, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

"It's no secret that President Trump has the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals in his sights," Bush wrote. "It's also no secret that ending this program, DACA, would be a callous and inhumane act, wholly un-American."

DACA "has allowed many recipients to come out from the shadows, where they lived in fear of discovery, and deportation," he argued. "Many DACA beneficiaries have grown up, studied, and graduated here. This is home. Many have little contact with the country where they were born."

"Condemning them to possible deportation would be heartbreaking."
