Former Florida governor and GOP candidate for president Jeb Bush on Wednesday applauded the choice of billionaire philanthropist Betsy DeVos to serve as Donald Trump's Secretary of Education.
"Betsy DeVos is an outstanding pick for Secretary of Education," Bush, Chairman of the Foundation for Excellence in Education, said in a statement.
"She has a long and distinguished history championing the right of all parents to choose schools that best ensure their children's success. Her allegiance is to families, particularly those struggling at the bottom of the economic ladder, not to an outdated public education model that has failed them from one generation to the next," Bush wrote.
DeVos, hailed by Trump as "a brilliant and passionate education advocate," is also a school voucher advocate and the second woman named to Trump's cabinet.
Reaction to the pick was mostly positive.
Conservative Review, however, panned the pick, writing "what a terrible pick [Michelle] Rhee would have been, but DeVos is no better."
"DeVos fails on two key promises Trump repeatedly made to voters: 'Get rid of Common Core' and 'keep education local,'" Joy Pullman wrote.
