Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., is unpopular with voters in his home state, according to a GBA Strategies poll released Wednesday.
- 56 percent gave him an unfavorable rating.
- 25 percent said he was favorable.
- 59 percent disapprove of his job performance.
- 34 percent approve.
Kelli Ward has announced she would run against Flake in 2018, and 58 percent of Republican voters favor her in the poll over the current senator, who gained 31 percent of the vote in that matchup.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's super PAC is not being a benefit to Flake, according to the poll — McConnell has a 17 percent favorable rating and a 42 percent unfavorable rating in the poll.
Among general election voters, not just Republicans, Flake also is unpopular, according to the poll.
- 48 percent rated him unfavorable personally, with 23 percent rating him favorably.
- 50 percent gave him a poor rating for his job, with 38 percent approving of the job he has done.
The poll also said he would be likely to lose the general election against Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz.. She has a 47 percent approval rating compared to his 40 percent, the poll report said.
Flake, a frequent Trump critic, offered some praise for the president on Sunday, Sept. 3, saying he has a "good team" dealing with national security.
The poll surveyed 600 likely voters in the 2018 general election and 500 likely Republican primary voters from Aug. 30 to Sept. 7. The general election vote had a plus or minus four percent margin of error, while the Republican primary vote had a plus or minus 4.4 percent margin of error, according to the poll report.
