Allies of Jeff Sessions were angered and called it "an embarrassment" that White House press secretary Sean Spicer refused to publicly defend the embattled attorney general during Tuesday's press briefing, Axios reported.
When Spicer was asked if President Donald Trump still had confidence in Sessions, the press secretary simply said, "I have not had that discussion with him."
That infuriated backers of Sessions.
"Spicer's passive aggressive, 'I haven't talked to the president' dance now has him refusing to defend our own attorney general. ... What an embarrassment," one told Axios. "Would he answer the same way if he'd asked about Reince? I don't think so."
The latest dustup comes amid multiple reports that Trump is not happy with Sessions, and that the former senator from Alabama had offered to resign over the consequences of his recusal from anything related to the Russia investigation.
Trump also lobbed criticism at Sessions for watering down his travel ban.
Of course, Spicer has battled his own high-profile missteps that have resulted in several reports regarding his future as press secretary.
