Donald Trump's continuous bashing of the media — and CNN, in particular — is a "sad" attempt to "delegitimize journalism," the cable news giant's president Jeff Zucker says.
"It's just unfortunate that the most powerful person in the world is trying to delegitimize journalism and an organization that plays such a vital role in our democracy," Zucker told New York magazine media reporter Gabriel Sherman in an interview published Wednesday.
"I think he's entitled to his opinion, but it's — to use one of his favorite words — sad."
Zucker's remarks come a week after Trump called CNN "fake news" after it broke the story of a dossier containing salacious allegations about the president-elect. Trump's transition team also threatened to boot a CNN reporter from a news conference.
"The fact is, the top four intelligence chiefs of the United States decided to include in their briefing to the president and president-elect a two-page summary of allegations involving the president-elect. That is newsworthy by any definition," Zucker told Sherman.
"We think that CNN has a job to do, which is to hold their feet to the fire. They may not like it, but they should respect it."
