Democrats' choice of Rep. Jerry Nadler to assume the ranking position on the House Judiciary Committee signals their intent to move on impeachment of the president, according to a story in The Washington Post.
The New York Democrat won in a landslide Wednesday over Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., 118-72, to replace the disgraced and retired John Conyers on the committee.
Democrats chose Nadler, a constitutional law expert and someone who has battled with President Donald Trump before, over Lofgren, a dogged immigration lawmaker.
That adds up to a party looking to impeach Trump, even if Democrats won't admit it, according to the Post.
"There is nobody better prepared, if the president messes around with the Constitution, to handle it than Jerry Nadler," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, the Post reported.
Nadler has skirmished with Trump since the 1980s, when as an assemblyman, he fought then-developer Trump on his efforts to build up the Upper West Side of NYC, the Post reported.
Nadler was one of many Democrats who refused to attend Trump's inauguration, saying he was not legitimate, and he said there might be a case for obstruction when Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey.
Dems are spoiling for a fight, according to the Post, especially if they can reclaim the majority in the House next fall.
"He's at the right place at the right time and when we need him most," Rep. Joe Crowley told the Post.
