President Donald Trump tweeted "Wow!" on Tuesday after New York Rep. Joe Crowley lost his Democratic primary race to a 28-year-old Bernie Sanders supporter, chiding the incumbent that "perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his president."
"Big Trump-hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi's place, just lost his primary election," Trump said in his post. "That is a big one that nobody saw happening."
Crowley, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, lost to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28, a political newcomer and community organizer in the Bronx who worked on Bernie Sanders campaign in 2016.
The Associated Press called the race for Ocasio-Cortez, 58 percent to 42 percent, with 85 percent of precincts reporting.
Crowley, 56, who was first elected in 1998, was considered a candidate for House speaker if the Democrats took back the majority in the November elections.
Crowley represents New York's 14th Congressional District, which includes parts of the Bronx and Queens.
Ocasio-Cortez ran a low-budget campaign and was outspent by Crowley by an 18-1 margin.
She won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party's left, including MoveOn.
