The Democratic Party needs to spread its message with an "awful lot of voices," Rep. Joe Kennedy III, who delivered one of five Democratic responses to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address, said Wednesday.
"What our party needs at the moment is an awful lot of voices out there. We're a big tent party. It's a broad, diverse country," the Massachusetts Democrat told CNN's "New Day" program.
Those voices will "try to find ways to actually construct an overarching narrative that will unify not only our party, but our country," Kennedy said.
"It's still early in the electoral process," he continued. "I expect that that will unify as we get tighter to those midterm elections… I encourage it."
"New Day" host Alisyn Camerota said that having multiple responses did not seem to show the Democrats were unified.
"I feel this angst as an elected Democrat, where I hear all the time about what's our message, who the leaders of the party (are)," he responded.
"I think the most important thing that Democrats need to do, and I think it's better for our country, is you have a big, broad debate, and you have people putting forth those narratives and seeing whether those messages resonate, and testing them out."
Kennedy said his response to President Trump's State of the Union address was about the message he believes Democrats need to be presenting.
"Our country has always aspired to be that unifying force, that city on a hill, if you will, that example of what a society that is open and fair looks like," Kennedy said.
