Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said Wednesday that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., has "neutered" the panel's "credibility" over the memo he hopes to release.
Manchin, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, told "CBS This Morning" that it would be "wrong" to release the memo written by Nunes' staff.
"I would definitely say Mr. President, please don't do that, that is wrong, it is absolutely wrong," the senator said. "The Senate Intelligence Committee is the only thing we have left that can put confidence into the system and also into the investigation."
The House committee voted this week along party lines to make public the memo, which details allegations that the FBI exceeded its authority under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. After delivering the State of the Union on Tuesday, President Donald Trump was overheard saying he would "100 percent" release the memo, according to CNN.
"I pray to God that doesn't happen for the sake of our country and I would say for the presidency and his administration that would be the absolute wrong thing," Manchin said. "Then you will see Congress cohere around this system to protect the judicial system and protect Mr. Mueller. I really believe that, so I believe that would be a wrong move."
