The moderate Democratic think tank Third Way has two new honorary co-chairs: Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota.
The two senators are uniting with the centrist group as it advocates for more more trade deals that are a point of conflict within the Democratic Party,
Politico reports.
Manchin and Heitkamp are arguably the most moderate members in the Democratic caucus in the Senate, hailing from two red states.
"Both of these senators have a proven track record of working across the aisle to get results and advance pragmatic, common-sense solutions," said Jon Cowan, president of
Third Way.
"We look forward to partnering with them to make an impact on policies that grow our economy and promote middle-class prosperity," Cowan added.
Manchin left the group No Labels after the group worked to unseat former Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall and supported his opponent, Sen. Cory Gardner, who went on to defeat Udall.
Democratic Sens. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Chris Coons of Delaware, Tom Carper of Delaware and Claire McCaskill of Missouri are also co-chairs of Third Way.
There are reports that both Manchin and Heitkamp may run for governor in their states instead of seeking re-election.
