A Republican senator who was part of a meeting between Donald Trump and Senate Republicans last week said Monday "tone matters" in regards to Trump's blunt messaging strategy.
"Well, the issue of tone did come up," Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "That's why you have the election. It's not for another six months. There's going to be a lot of debate and discussion and it's going to be about the issues."
When pressed about whether or not Trump would really want to change his harsh tone to one that's more presidential, Barrasso said the presidential campaign will be about the issues.
"Tone matters in the campaign," Barrasso said. "This is going to be about jobs, the economy, what direction our country needs to take. What we've seen under Barack Obama and a growth in the economy of 1 to 2 percent, that can't be the new normal for our country."
The senator added the progress that was made regarding Trump's tone was "encouraging."
"The meeting went for over an hour," Barrasso said. "He never interrupted anyone. It was responsive and very positive and very productive."
Republican
lawmakers have grown concerned over Trump's way of getting his point across, although the strategy has worked thus far. Members of the GOP are now looking for Trump to become more presidential during the general election campaign, once he officially earns the party's presidential nod.
