Immigration reform and the soon-to-be-defunct Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will be tackled early next year, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wy., told Fox News on Wednesday.
"The deadline that President [Donald] Trump has set is actually March, and so there's time to do that," Barrasso said. "There are discussions. But for me, I'm going to focus on border security, enforcement, and ending chain migration."
Congress is expected to wrap up its work for 2017 this week and leave town until January.
DACA, which allowed people who illegally came to the United States as children with their parents to stay if they meet certain criteria, will be phased out by March 2018.
President Donald Trump has urged Congress to come up with a fix, and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly on Tuesday said the Trump administration would have a list of border security and other policy changes it wants to be part of the deal.
Top senators are working on putting together a deal to resolve the fate of nearly 690,000 DACA recipients.
