The Republican Party is in danger of “losing the future” by turning off millennials, Gov. John Kasich said Sunday.
In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” the Ohio Republican said the special Senate election of Democrat Doug Moore in Alabama showed “some very interesting things.”
“We’re beginning to see more of a tug-of-war pulling people towards a better position on the [Republican] Party,” he said referring to GOP voters who voted for someone other than GOP nominee Roy Moore, and Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., “who spoke out and said he was not for the candidate down there.”
“I look at Alabama, and I see people are not happy with us being small, angry, and narrow,” he said. “They're starting to say ‘no.’ That means that those of us who believe in a positive party are beginning to win, but we have a long way to go.”
Kasich said the party’s stances on issues like immigration, health care and trade, and those who “look at problems” with a “negative” view are risking the future of the party.
“Other people … look at the problems and say ‘we can fix them,’ so instead of losing the future, which is what we're doing today, turning off millennials,” he said.
Kasich's comments come as the GOP looks to defend Republican strongholds in the House and Senate, as well as in statehouses across the country in 2018.
