President Donald Trump's new chief of staff John Kelly wants the president to stop the practice of announcing policy decisions on Twitter, according to a news report Friday.

Though Kelly acknowledges he cannot stop Trump from using Twitter, he wants to push "the tweets in the right direction," Politico reported, citing a White House official.

Trump has made several announcements on Twitter which have caught his administration officials by surprise. On July 26, he posted on Twitter he would ban transgender people from serving in the military.

Defense Department lawyers said they had warned Trump against such a ban, fearing legal consequences, and learned about the decision from his tweet, Politico reported.

Trump also announced on Twitter that Kelly, who previously served in the administration as Homeland Security Secretary, would take over for former chief of staff Reince Priebus, who he also tweeted would be leaving the White House. Kelly was unaware the president would make the announcement through Twitter, according to Politico.

Kelly is finishing his first week as chief of staff after being sworn in on Monday.
