Secretary of State John Kerry is set to introduce friend and billionaire liberal donor George Soros at a private State Department forum Tuesday,
The Washington Free Beacon reports.
It’s more evidence that Soros is tapping his Democratic ties to push his business interests and political goals, some critics say. Soros donated more than
$23 million to Kerry’s failed White House bid in 2004.
He was to speak at an event sponsored by the George C. Marshall Center European Center for Security Studies, which is jointly run by the German and American defense departments.
The hedge fund manager, with Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Douglas Frantz, was to discuss "strengthening civil society, democracy and the world economy."
Soros was recently revealed to have funneled more than $80 million over two decades to efforts to
legalize cannabis.
Soros’ financial interests, particularly some of his so-called green energy interests, often merge with those of liberal policymakers, critics say.
The Beacon quotes Michael Rubin, a former Bush adviser and American Enterprise Institute scholar as saying Kerry’s introduction of Soros looks bad. Hosting Soros is the "diplomatic equivalent of prostitution," he asserted.
Rubin said the optics of the event are "horrible" given Soros’ longstanding ties to the administration and his past record of marrying policy advocacy with business.
State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf lashed out at the criticism and Rubin’s allegations as "wholly ridiculous," the Beacon said.
