Sen. John McCain said Friday it is easy to punish China, but a lot harder to hold it truly accountable.

He urged the U.S. to develop "a real strategy and positive trade agenda." And he said the U.S. should rejoin the Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement with Pacific nations. Trump had pulled out of the TPP last year, the Washington Examiner noted.

McCain's comments came in an afternoon tweet.

His remarks follow threats by President Donald Trump to slap an additional $100 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods. China has warned that it would fight back with new trade measures.

And China has unveiled a list of 106 U.S. goods targeted for tariffs. The move came just hours after the Trump administration proposed duties on some 1,300 Chinese industrial, technology, transport and medical products.
